More Siapan pictures

987 Japanese shore gun at Suicide Cliff base.  The sign at the left is the bottom of the stairway leading up to the Last Command Post site.

991 Another shore gun and the bottom of the stairway leading to the Last Command Post.  The post itself is in the horizontal slot carved out of the cliff.  It extends just as far on the other side of the outcropping providing a 270 degree view looking toward the beach.  The small lump in the right-center foreground is a small artillery piece, probably and anti-tank gun.

996 This is the Japanese Memorial below Suicide Cliff, the inland site of mass suicide for Japanese troops and civilians.

1007 You can just make out Diana in the dark lavender T-shirt at the upper left on the cliff top.  This is Banzai Cliff, the seaside suicide site for the Japanese.

1077 Diana at the American Memorial reading some of the names in the 2nd Marine Division section of the Memorial.  The largest number of casualties were in the 2nd & 4th Marine Divisions and the Army’s 27th Infantry Division.  Much smaller numbers were lost in the Navy and Army Air Corps spread over several units.  Diana’s dad was a Marine and my dad was in the Army.  Between the two of them they slogged a lot of jungle in the Pacific Theater.
