4987 This is the view of the Ilu River (Alligator Creek) the Japanese would have had as they approached. The Schmidt-Rivers-Diamond machine gun position would have been about at the left end of the building that’s now there. The dead were piled up in the river and on the far bank. About 300 were in this area.
5053 We are standing atop Hill 2 looking over at Hill 1, where that clump of trees stands up the little valley in front of us. The Marines and Chutes were dug in all along the top of the ridge that goes off the picture to the left and then curves back into view ending at that clump of trees. At the time the whole area was jungle. Since then farming and other activities have cleared a lot of the jungle leaving this grass land.
5091 This is the farewell band and dancers on the pier. Those long sets of tubes that look like giant pan flutes are actually tuned drums. You can see some of the large group of locals that came to see us off behind them.
5092 More of the locals seeing us off. There was another pier at the front of the ship that was also crowded to capacity.
5097 Diana and Isabel waving at me as I take their picture with the band. In the back you can see the lady on the left still smiling. When they were both dancing everyone back there was yelling, smiling and clapping.
